“Weeding the Garden”

One of my sponsors responded with some good questions regarding today’s affirmation and report. I mentioned that one of the positive things I did yesterday was weeding the front flower bed.

“With a number of your affirmations you talk about weeding your gardens. A question to you is are you weeding things in your life? With the weeds in your garden, do you keep them and carry them around with you? Do you leave the weeds by the side of the bed and throw them in the trash? Are you doing the same with the weeds of your life or do you carry them with you?”

My reply was as follows:

Dear ________,

Good questions and a good analogy!

Weeding the garden is indeed a good analogy for my life and my recovery.

  1. I need to weed (and water) the garden regularly.
  2. I am playing the long game. It isn’t simply about this year’s harvest. It is primarily about building soil.
  3. I grub out the weeds, when I can, by the roots.
  4. When I can’t grub them out by the roots, I at least chop them down to ground level, so that I am not allowing their roots to receive more nourishment and strength.
  5. I compost the weeds, turning them into next year’s fertilizer, crops, and flowers.

Thanks! I think you just wrote today’s blog post for downtoearthbeliever.com!”

So, I keep weeding the garden that is me. But I try not to keep the weeds around to admire or to regret these days. I don’t look back at the past a lot. I don’t ignore it, but I don’t let the past be my persistent focus. The present, the future, and eternity are more than enough for me to keep in my mind and heart.
